1. What the Letters Mean

The letters in a UL rating tell you the class of fire the extinguisher can put out:

  • A – Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, cloth, plastics)

  • B – Flammable liquids and gases (gasoline, oil, paint, grease)

  • C – Energized electrical equipment (wiring, outlets, appliances)

  • D – Combustible metals (magnesium, titanium, potassium; industrial use)

  • K – Cooking oils and fats (deep fryers, commercial kitchens)

Example: A rating of 2A:10B:C means the extinguisher is effective on Class A, B, and C fires.

The numbers measure relative effectiveness:

  • Class A numbers: Each number = the equivalent of 1.25 gallons of water.

    • Example: 2A = equal to 2.5 gallons of water.

  • Class B numbers: The number = square footage of liquid fire it can put out.

    • Example: 10B = effective on 10 sq. ft. of flammable liquid fire.

  • Class C: No numbers; just indicates the extinguisher is safe on energized electrical fires.
