The auger flighting is the precision-machined spiral component at the center of Manitowoc flaker and nugget ice machine evaporators, driven in continuous rotation within the cylindrical evaporator barrel to scrape the thin ice sheet that forms on the barrel's inner surface and advance it upward to the cutter head. The 8" OD specification must match the evaporator barrel's inner diameter precisely — correct clearance between the flighting and the barrel wall is critical for effective ice scraping without binding the auger drive or wearing the evaporator surface prematurely.

Worn auger flighting that has lost its edge radius or developed damage from freeze-up events scrapes the evaporator surface less effectively, allowing ice to accumulate and build up on the barrel wall, which can progress to a complete auger jam. Flighting wear also reduces the mechanical efficiency of ice transport, lowering output rate. Severe auger-to-barrel contact from worn flighting can score or groove the evaporator inner surface, requiring both auger and evaporator replacement. Replacing with this OEM part restores correct scraping clearance and efficient ice transport.
