The bin switch monitors the ice level in the storage bin and automatically signals the control board to halt ice production when the bin is full and resume production when the ice level drops after dispensing. Manitowoc machines use a magnetically actuated design that senses the presence of ice without requiring physical contact, providing reliable level detection without moving parts that could freeze or jam. Reliable bin switch operation is fundamental to automated, unattended ice machine operation.

A faulty bin switch is one of the most common reasons Manitowoc ice machines stop producing ice despite an empty bin, or continue producing and overfilling the bin. Symptoms include the machine shutting down with a full-bin indication when the bin is visibly empty, failure to restart automatically after ice is dispensed, or intermittent unexplained shutdowns during production.
