Details
Flame detection is a safety-critical function in commercial gas equipment. The GAD200X probe tip is positioned within the burner flame zone so that an established flame produces a measurable ionization current between the probe and ground. The ignition module reads this current and holds the gas valve open as long as valid flame is detected. If the probe fails to report a flame signal, the module closes the gas valve and initiates a safety lockout, preventing unburned gas accumulation.
Signs that the detection probe needs replacement include the burner going into lockout shortly after ignition even when the flame appears visually stable, intermittent lockout faults during normal operation, or the ignition module displaying a fault code related to flame signal loss. Probe tip erosion or carbon fouling from the combustion environment are common causes of reduced flame signal output.
Replacement must be performed by a qualified gas appliance technician. The probe is removed from the burner assembly, the new GAD200X is installed at the correct position relative to the burner flame zone, and the microamp flame signal should be measured and verified to be within the acceptable range before returning the equipment to service.
