Details
The filter drier is a sealed refrigeration system component packed with a molecular sieve desiccant and a filtration screen that removes moisture, acid, and particulates from the refrigerant and compressor oil as they circulate through the system. Moisture in a refrigeration circuit combines with refrigerant to form acids that corrode copper lines, attack compressor motor windings, and destroy the expansion device.
The filter drier must be replaced any time the refrigeration system is opened for service — including compressor replacement, refrigerant leak repair, or system recharge — because exposure to ambient air saturates the desiccant material and renders it ineffective. A saturated drier allows moisture to reach the expansion device, where it freezes in the metering orifice and creates a restriction that mimics low refrigerant charge. Failing to replace the drier during system service is one of the most common causes of repeat compressor and expansion device failures.
