Details
The Heavy Duty Thermocouple (Part# 1173576) is a Southbend-compatible replacement thermocouple, thermopile, or flame sensor for use in Southbend commercial ranges, griddles, broilers, and gas cooking equipment. This component is the flame-sensing device in the pilot safety circuit, generating a small electrical signal whenever it detects the heat of a lit pilot flame and using that signal to hold the gas safety valve open.
Thermocouples and thermopiles convert heat directly into a millivolt-level electrical signal through thermoelectric junctions positioned in the pilot flame; the resulting signal energizes a magnetic coil inside the gas safety valve that keeps the valve open. If the pilot flame goes out, the signal decays within seconds and the valve closes automatically, shutting off gas flow as a safety measure.
A weak or failing thermocouple typically presents as a pilot that lights but will not stay lit once the ignition button or knob is released, a longer than normal hold time required to keep the pilot lit during lighting, or a valve that trips out during normal operation despite a visibly healthy pilot flame. These symptoms usually indicate the thermoelectric junction has degraded and can no longer generate sufficient millivoltage.
Replacement should be performed by a qualified gas appliance technician with the gas supply shut off and the equipment cooled. Disconnect the sensing tip from the pilot bracket and the electrical connection at the gas valve, install the replacement with the sensing tip positioned in the hottest part of the pilot flame per the original orientation, and reconnect the valve-end connection securely. Relight the pilot, hold the ignition control for the manufacturer's specified time, and verify the pilot remains lit after release before returning the unit to service.
This compatible aftermarket replacement thermocouple, thermopile, or flame sensor is manufactured to the dimensional and functional specifications of Southbend equipment, ensuring proper fit, reliable operation, and long-term performance in a commercial kitchen environment.
