Details
The fan cycling control regulates the operation of the condenser fan motor in Manitowoc air-cooled ice machines to maintain stable condensing (head) pressure across varying ambient temperature conditions. In cold ambient environments, the fan cycling control cycles the condenser fan off when head pressure drops below a set threshold, allowing pressure to rebuild to a level that ensures proper refrigerant metering through the expansion device. Without head pressure control, machines operated in cold conditions experience excessively low head pressure that causes flooding of the evaporator and poor ice formation.
A failed fan cycling control that runs the condenser fan continuously can cause chronic low-head-pressure conditions in cold weather, resulting in reduced ice quality and production capacity. A control that keeps the fan off in warm conditions causes high-head-pressure shutdowns. Nuisance high-pressure faults that clear on reset during warm weather are a common symptom of a fan cycling control that has drifted out of setpoint. This inexpensive component should be evaluated before replacing the condenser fan motor when the machine exhibits seasonal production problems.
