Details
The refrigeration compressor is the primary component of the Manitowoc ice machine's refrigeration system, compressing low-pressure refrigerant vapor from the evaporator outlet and discharging it as high-pressure, high-temperature vapor to the condenser, where it releases heat and returns to liquid form to repeat the refrigeration cycle. The compressor's capacity is precisely sized to the refrigerant charge, evaporator area, and operating conditions specified for the machine model.
Compressor failure presents as a machine that runs without producing ice, attempts to start but trips breakers or blows fuses from a locked-rotor condition, or exhibits progressive reduction in ice production from gradual internal wear that reduces compression efficiency. Compressor replacement requires a licensed EPA 608-certified technician to recover the existing refrigerant charge, install a new filter drier, install and leak-test the new compressor, pull a proper deep vacuum, and recharge with the correct refrigerant type and weight. The filter drier must always be replaced concurrent with compressor replacement.
