The Thermopile (Part# 20410) is a Cleveland-compatible replacement thermopile for use in Cleveland commercial gas-fired cooking and steamer equipment. The thermopile generates a millivolt electrical signal from the heat of the pilot flame, which is used to power and hold open the main gas valve during normal equipment operation, producing higher voltage output than a single thermocouple to reliably operate the gas valve.
Thermopiles degrade over time from continuous high-temperature exposure of the pilot flame environment, resulting in a reduced millivolt output that may no longer provide sufficient current to hold the gas valve open reliably. Symptoms of a failing thermopile include a pilot flame that lights correctly but will not hold when the pilot button is released, intermittent main burner shutdowns, or a gas valve that requires the pilot button to be held for an unusually long time. Measuring the millivolt output with a meter while the pilot is lit is the definitive test for thermopile condition.
Thermopile replacement should be performed by a qualified gas appliance technician with the gas supply shut off and the equipment cooled. Remove the thermopile from its mounting position in the pilot assembly, disconnect the lead wires from the gas valve, and install the new Thermopile in the same location. Restore gas and follow the lighting procedure in the Cleveland equipment manual, holding the pilot button long enough for the new thermopile to heat up and generate sufficient millivolts, then verify that the pilot holds and the main burner operates normally.
