The float arm rises and falls with the water surface, mechanically operating the valve seat to regulate water supply without requiring electrical control. Correct water level control is fundamental to consistent ice production — insufficient water causes the pump to lose prime and run dry, while excess water can overflow into the machine's base.

A float valve with a worn seat, corroded float arm, or waterlogged float will fail to maintain the correct sump level — either allowing the sump to drain continuously (stuck open) or preventing water from entering (stuck closed). Float valve components are subject to mineral scale accumulation over time, which can freeze the float arm or build up on the valve seat.
